One of the news items that’s been bubbling around for a some time is the impact of incoming changes to the interpretation of IR35 legislation. 

This has been billed as an attack on ‘White Van Man’ but the impact of a tightening of the interpretation of IR35 legislation in the UK is having a significant effect on the IT sector.  Although there was a U-turn on some of the assault on self-employed people from the government, it has left behind a change in the approach and interpretation of IR35.

November 20th marked the announcement of a new round of approved cloud services, available to buy from the Government Digital Marketplace.

Silverstring has significantly strengthened its public-sector cloud offering in this round.  It has added cloud transitioning consultancy services.  These enable buyers to easily access the skills needed to transition from an on-site service (or no service) situation, to cloud-based data protection and storage.

New backup challenges – the Office 365 conundrum

Microsoft’s utility-computing Office 365 offering takes email out of the corporate domain and places it firmly into the welcoming, low-maintenance home of the cloud.  This has triggered something of an unexpected data protection issue outside of email.  Bundled in the install of Office 365 is what was known as Lync, and is now renamed Skype For Business.  This is the Unified Communications (or UC for short) extension to email: instant messaging and voice over IP (VOIP), if you want to use it.
